Sambar Cucumber

$6.00

Nobody is quite sure what vegetable these are exactly. Melons? Pumpkins? Cucumbers? Well, as it turns out it could actually be all of the above. This variety goes by a plethora of names: Madras Cucumber, dosakaya, mangaluru southekayi, naadan vellarikka..

Sambar cucumber is a cooking cucumber variety that is most notably used in Sambar, a South Indian lentil stew. Another cultural dish this cucumber is added to is Dosakaya Pappu, a warm, comforting dal dish.

This specific variety is originally from Andhra Pradesh, India. Grow like other cucumbers. They require an adequate amount of water and should be trellised, but can be grown trailing with adequate space.

Botanically this “cucumber” is technically a melon (Cucumis melo). One plant will be able to produce fruit without needing a second plant for cross polination.
