Sensitive Plant
Sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica) is native to the tropics of Central and South America but has naturalized throughout the tropics and is considered invasive in some parts of the world. Also known as the shy plant, the leaves curl up in reponse to being touched, wind or temperature shifts. It grows best in full sun and can grow in poor soils without a problem. It can be grown outdoors in zones 7-11 but can also make an excellent houseplant. The plant contains 5-meo-dmt, the same compound in Ayahuasca and the Colorado River toad, and used for religious ceremonies or recreationally.
Outdoors they can grow up to 5 feet tall in one season and can easily reseed itself. Take care in tropical regions as it can quickly take over a garden bed. Although they can survive a winter, they should be considered an annual. The growth rate and vigor sharply declines after the first year. Saving seeds and starting them again the following year is easily done.
All five parts of Mimosa plant (Panchang – leaves, flowers, stems, roots, and fruits) are used for medicinal purpose in Ayurveda. It is said to have antibacterial, anti-venom, antifertility, anticonvulsant, antidepressant, aphrodisiac, and various other pharmacological activities.
