Urad Dal (Black Gram)
A small., compact bush producing dozens of hairy little pods with 5-10 urad dal seeds inside! These plants were easy to grow and required very little to no attention during the growing season. The green pods can be consumed while young or they can be left on the plant until they dry up and harvested for the black seeds (ural dal).
Urad dal is used on a daily basis in South Indian houses to make batters for vada, idlis and dosas and is also an important ingredient in tempering for most south Indian dishes.
As a legume, the plants fix nitrogen back into the soil, making it a great addition to any garden. From about 5 plants we saved around a pint of seeds!
