Tomato 'Piennolo Giallo' (Italy)

$6.00

You may be familiar with these tomatoes if you’ve ever seen a bundle of tomatoes hanging in a countryside Italian kitchen. Grown in the volcanic soils near Napoli, these tomatoes are harvested by the truss and hung together with twine to be stored through the Winter, often being used around Christmas. Tomaotes are small and oval, with a pointed nipple at the blossom end. Their high dry content makes them perfect for long storage - between 6-10 months! Fantastic rich, sweet flavor that continues to concentrate over time.

A fun garden project is to harvest and hang the fruit in long twine loops as tomato 'ristras' ("piennolo" meaning "hanging" in Neapolitan dialect). This variety has been selected for by Hans Fama in Southern California.
